A creative approach
to counselling

I am a qualified Integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, and registered member of the BACP. I have over 18 years experience of supporting people in different settings. I work with adults, young people and children both online or in-person in Glasgow.

Do you need therapy?

Everyone can benefit from counselling. As one of my favourite bands say, 'Modern Life is Rubbish' and we are often not very kind to ourselves about how we cope with that.  Friends and family don't always feel the easiest to talk to, so it can be freeing to have someone outwith your normal circles to talk through life's complexities with. You may be experiencing low mood, anxiety, trauma, struggles associated with neurodiversity or grief, or something just doesn't feel right or you feel a bit stuck. Whatever it is, I will always meet you with curiosity rather than judgement, offering a safe space to offload, process and explore your feelings and experiences.

Going for counselling is like clearing out the cupboard in your house that really needs to be cleared out. You put off doing it for a long time because it feels overwhelming, keep shoving more stuff in and jamming the door closed. However, things keep falling out at inopportune moments. One day you decide to tackle it. You start pulling everything out and you may feel surprised about what you find. Inevitably there is a moment during the process where you may wish you hadn't ever started, you don't know what to do with any of the stuff you found, you might question 'how will that all fit back in there?', 'do I need any of this anymore?' or 'who put that in there?'. Then you start to sort through it. Stuff starts slotting back in, you find some treasures and you get rid of some of the clutter. You finish and step back to admire your work, feeling less burdened, accomplished and proud of yourself. My job is to help you to sort through your thoughts, feelings and experiences, label the 'boxes' and help you to decide what you want to keep and what can let go of. Like the mental health version of 'The Home Edit'.

My approach

The days of lying on the sofa and talking about your deepest fears to a man with a monocle and elbow patches have long gone - and goodbye to them. In sessions, we will simply talk! I believe you are the expert in your own life and you are in charge of what you bring to each session. I may draw your attention to certain things you have said to provide insight or offer some psychoeducation to help you to understand why you may be feeling a certain way. My aim is to build trust with you so that you feel safe to explore some of the more uncomfortable things you are carrying. I always work in a considerate way in order to keep you feeling safe and unjudged while you unpack your mental cupboard- we go at your pace.

I work in a truly collaborative way, where we talk through any problems you have together and develop practical strategies to move on in life in a way that feels right for you. As an integrative practitioner I use theories and techniques from different counselling modalities including person centred, psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to inform my work. This means I will adapt my style to find what works best for you, working creatively to ensure you get the most from therapy.
