Both terms are used interchangeably and describe 'talking therapy'. However, counselling deals with more specific issues such as transitions or relationship issues and tends to be more short-term. Psychotherapy tends to be more in-depth and longer term, offering a deeper exploration of past experiences, patterns of behaviour and mental health issues. I offer both. Some people find they initially start counselling to deal with a specific issue and it organically becomes more in-depth.
I offer sessions online, or in-person in Glasgow. I use rooms in both the city centre (just off George Square) and Newton Mearns.
Sessions will usually last 50-minutes. In our first session we will discuss our contract for working together and confidentiality. Then we might discuss what has brought you for counselling, we may set some goals, if this is helpful, and we will go from there. You will always set the pace of the sessions and the focus of our appointments will be determined by you.
If sitting across from someone and talking feels too challenging, I can also offer walk-and-talk therapy, or simply offer some creative activities to do during the session, such a mindfulness colouring or crafts.
I usually review the work we are doing together every 6-8 sessions to ensure you are getting the most out of counselling and to give you the opportunity to feedback what is working for you and what might not be. I find this encourages true collaboration.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation on the phone or online if you wish to ask any questions to help determine if I am the right counsellor for you.
I believe everyone should have access to counselling regardless of their financial position, so happy to discuss discounted rates for those who need it.
